Internet Addiction a New Mental Illness in Children? Really?

The Sydney Morning Herald today ran an article discussing the possibility that internet addiction in children could be a new “disorder”.

”The most typical sign of addiction is anything that looks like withdrawal  symptoms,” he said. ”So any expression of distress, frustration, irritability  when they don’t get to play.”

I know Sunday of a long weekend is most likely a slow news day – but Really?   Really?  An addiction?  A Mental Illness?

We all know that computer games and technology can be very enticing, but I am suspecting there is a bit of dramatisation and over reaction going on here for the sake of filling a few inches of a newspaper.

I certainly hope this isn’t going to turn into some sort of Drug Company marketing campaign to “treat” the internet addiction disorder…….
