The Sydney Morning  Herald reports that parents are paying for Pre-School Reading Time for their kids so that they will learn to read and be ready for school.

I thought the idea was that kids can learn to read at school, and find it a bit strange if people are thinking reading is something a kid needs to do before it gets there.

Big YES to story time.   Big YES to reading lots of books to little kids and talking about the books and the stories.   Big YES to creative and imaginative play.   Big YES to art and craft, drawing and tracing things.

But paying for story time with “Structured Learning opportunities”?  Can’t little kids just be little kids?

What do you think?
